A special thanks to Harry D. Weed as this is the man who invented tire chains in 1904.

Harry got the idea when he notices folks similar minded to himself putting rope or twain and sticks in-between the tires for traction on snowy roads. So basically, we all must have some appreciation for this man! THANKS MR. WEED!

Chain Station Locations

If somehow you’ve passed vail chain station heading east on I 70 and you need to chain up here is a list of chain stations you can stop at by mile marker:

-mm 178 that’s in vail the one you missed

-mm 183 to 184 that’s just a few miles passed the last vail exit so if you missed vail you will want to stop here.

-mm 187 it’s a shoulder so be very careful here if you stop there.

-mm 195

-mm 203 which happens to be a beautiful scenic area over Dillon Reservoir

-mm 205 which is Silverthorne, CO and that’s another major chain station where you will find Vail Transport Towing and Heavy Duty Tire of the Rockies at installing and selling chains as a chain vendor to truckers in need you also have the mm219, 228, 241 and the mm251. Heading west is in this order from east to west- mile marker 254 which is buffalo overlook the 228, mm223, mm221, 219, 213, 197, 179.
